Built from live listings
Every figure is the median of what sellers are asking across the listings that are live on eBay right now. We refresh them daily, so a price here reflects today's market rather than a historical snapshot.
Live asking prices track real value closely in a market that turns over quickly, because a mispriced listing either sells or gets relisted lower within days. That is also why we require a minimum number of live listings before publishing anything — a thin market moves slowly enough for an unrealistic price to sit untouched.
How listings are matched to a model
Every listing is verified against the manufacturer part number in its title, then checked to be the whole tool rather than a part, in the right form factor. Roughly 47% of what a search returns is discarded: accessories and service parts, listings that never name the part number, multi-tool bundles, and bare tools listed with batteries when we are pricing the bare tool.
Median and range, never an average
We publish the median with its interquartile range — the middle half of the market — and the number of listings behind it. Averages are badly distorted by the small number of sellers asking two or three times the going rate, and those listings are real, so we show the spread rather than removing them.
When we publish nothing
- Fewer than 8 verified live listings: no price is published for that model.
- Fewer than 8 verified new-condition listings: no percentage-of-new is published, even when the used-side figures are solid.
- Where a tool type cannot be determined from listings with confidence, the model is excluded from category pages rather than guessed into one.
“% of new” means new on eBay
The comparison price is the median of new-condition eBay listings for the same part number — a street price, which includes open-box and grey-market stock. It is not manufacturer list price. We use it because published tool MSRPs are close to fictional: retailers cycle prices back up to list before running a promotion so the discount reads bigger.
Limitations
- Some live listings are priced optimistically and will sit unsold. The interquartile range next to every median shows how wide that spread is.
- Thin samples are noisier. The listing count next to every figure is there to be read.
- US market (eBay.com) only.
- Data refreshes daily; individual listings may sell or change price between refreshes.
